Building Weather Dynamic Data Message

To create a weather message using Prismview’s Weather Source follow the steps below.

Open Prismview and choose the Content tab at the top and choose the Create Dynamic Image button.

Screen_01

Enter the name for this message—such as “Weather” and click OK.

Screen_02

On the left hand side of the Dynamic Data Editor click the ‘Add’ button to insert a new data layer.

Screen_03

Choose the HTTP XML Parse option and give the layer a name, such as “Current Temp” and click ‘Add’.

Screen_04

Copy the link that you received from Prismview’s CreativeGroup and paste it into the field marked URL. In the Element field, type “Curent_Temp_F” as shown below.

Screen_05

Other items are also available for parsing, this image below shows the XML code and some of the available elements. You may view the entire XML file in most any web-browser, however, Google® Chrome is recommended–other browsers often require settings changes before they will display the raw XML properly. XML is written using tagged elements that have an opening and a closing tag (which appear in purple). The info we want to parse is the data between the tags, shown in black. By identifying the appropriate element in the XML we are able to parse the desired data. While there are other elements available for parsing, this tutorial will focus on the temperature only.

Screen_08

At this point in the creation process a background should be imported. Do this by clicking the Set Background Animation (In PV11) or Set Background Image (in PV9 and PV11). Browse to a background image of your chosing–please note that images or animations must be sized properly or stretching will occur.

Screen_05c

Once a background image or animation has been loaded you can easily move the temperature into position and make any needed adjustments to the font, size, and color by using the font options in the lower half of the editor.

Screen_06

Add the next few days’ Highs and Lows by repeating the steps taken when adding the current temperature–click the ‘Add’ button on the left and choose the HTTP XML Parse option, give the layer a name such as “Day 2 High” and paste the same URL in the URL field. Within the Element field of Day 2’s High, input “Day_2_High” as shown above.  When parsing Day 2’s Low input “Day_2_Low” in the Element field, and so on for Day 3’s High and Low and Day 4’s High and Low–if you have room to show multiple days’ forecast temperatures.

Screen_07

When you are finished adding daily Highs and Lows click the “Save and Exit” button at the bottom right of the window and the weather message will save itself to the Content Library and become available for scheduling.

Creation Tips

NOTE: If the user wants to view the actual XML tree with all of the available weather items, it is recommended that they view the URL in Google® Chrome. If they must use Internet Explorer then it is recommended that the user opens the Internet Options window -> the Content tab -> Feeds and Web Slices -> Settings -> and uncheck the ‘Turn on feed reading view’ option, then click OK. This will then allow the user to view the xml tree.

If the customer has any questions or encounters problems while building their own weather message, they may contact the CreativeGroup by phone (866-989-3726) or email (CreativeGroup@prismview.com) for assistance.

Due to a change in our weather data provider, Prismview has now partnered with Dark Sky Forecasts to provide accurate, web-based weather data, multi-day forecasts,  lunar cycles, and more. This new service is available for all current PV9 or PV11 users, as well as other interested persons that have an internet enabled display or HDTV. The new service has 2 options—a FREE service or a subscription.

The FREE Service

The FREE service includes an XML weather feed for the customer’s location at no charge. This feed will update every hour, providing the current temperature, weather conditions and forecast data for the next 5 days. Customers can then use the XML data to build their own weather message in Prismview’s Dynamic Data (.DD2) editor. A tutorial for building this type of DD2 is available here.

Complete the form below to get started using the Free service then click “Get Feed”.

Enter your longitude & latitude coordinates. To get your longitude and latitude goto google maps and pin your location you will see the longitute and latitude.

By checking this box I certify that I have read and agree to the terms below for this service.

The Subscription Service: Template or Custom

The subscription service includes a much more content rich XML feed with current temperature, conditions, daily forecasts for 7 days, wind speed, lunar cycles, and more—but also includes the actual weather message based on either a template or is custom built. The weather data also refreshes once every 5 min—that’s 12X more frequently than in the Free option. Two file format options are offered—a custom Dynamic Data message for playback in Prismview (PV9 and PV11), or a dynamic HTML5 webpage (PV11 only). Any LED sign size or HDTV resolution is supported and other features such as sound and motion may also be available depending on what player the customer will be using.

Three templates are currently available: Orange Juice, New Black, and Blue Sky.

Weather message using a template: $10/mo

Agree to our Terms of Use at the bottom then get started using the subscription service by emailing the CreativeGroup (CreativeGroup@prismview.com) with these 4 things:

  • Your company/account name
  • zip code (or long/lat)—at the display
  • Indicate which of the templates you want to use.
  • Indicate which format you want the message to be—HTML5 (PV11 only) or Prismview Dynamic Data (PV9 and PV11).

Upon completion, the CreativeGroup will send a link to the file/url of the weather message for approval/download.

Custom weather message: $10/mo (+) a $75 setup fee

Templates are not all we offer however, many customers want to make their weather messages unique with a logo or specific color scheme and layout—if this sounds appealing then we recommend requesting the custom weather option. Agree to our Terms of Use at the bottom then get started using the custom subscription service by emailing the CreativeGroup (CreativeGroup@prismview.com) with these 4 things:

  • Your company/account name
  • zip code (or long/lat)—at the display
  • Provide instructions as to what you’d like to see in a custom weather message
  • Indicate which format you want the message to be—HTML5 (PV11 only) or Prismview Dynamic Data (PV9 and PV11)

Upon completion, the CreativeGroup will send a link to the file/url of the weather message for approval/download.

We look forward to hearing from you!
